The University of Nigeria, Nsukka Campus, was on Tuesday closed for two weeks after students had protested power blackout and water scarcity.
The statement from the university management signed by the Chief Public Relations Officer, Okwun Omeaku, eads: “This is to bring to the notice of all students and the entire university community, that the University of Nigeria shall proceed on a two-week mid semester break with immediate effect.
“Consequently, all academic activities on the campuses are hereby suspended for the period. Students are by this notice directed to vacate their hostels within the next 24 hours, that is, not later than 6pm. on Tuesday, June 02, 2015.”
A decision to shut down the unversity was taken by its authorities in a bid to prevent a riot planned by the angry students who suffer from he lack of electricity and acute water scarcity. Besides, the students were ordered to vacate their hostels on both Enugu and Nsukka campuses.
On Monday morning the students of Enugu Campus arranged the protest calling on the authorities to quickly tackle the problem. They complain about the failure of the management to provide power through available generators both to the classrooms and hostels for a very long time. As a result, students and lecturers now use rechargeable lanterns for academic activities.
