HAIR : Milan Fashion Week SS16 Trends

The shows are a hectic time.

While we are looking for fashion trend ultimately, there are a million different elements going on. I always have to stay on top of what beauty trends are coming out or what colors but some notice hair, jewellery, accessories or shoes.

I must admit, as a make up artist, I'm pretty clueless about hair. I'm old school and not one of those artists who does both. So I'm very grateful that hair savours, Redken, a backstage favourite have sent me an email with the trends carefully broken down!

Their global creative director, Guido Palau, has carefully explained how he achieved each look for each show in a step by step guide as well. So it couldn't be easier. Guido has worked with some of the world's biggest brands including YSL, Ralph Lauren, Marc Jacobs and Prada to name a few. He is one of the busiest stylists as well working on 30 shows a season!

Bottega Veneta
'The Natural Look'

"The look at Bottega is very natural. Tomas [Maier] wanted the girls to look like they’d been outside, trekking, walking, living, so they’re very fresh. It literally took me five minutes to create the ponytails. I blasted the hair with Redken’s wind blown 05, then created a rough part, and pulled the girls’ hair halfway through an elastic to create a half-finished loop, so it’s the way a very real woman would do her hair.”

Create the look:
  1. Start with dry hair in its natural texture if slightly wavy. If needed, bend random sections of hair around a 1-1/2 inch curling iron for additional body.
  2. Liberally spray Redken Wind Blown 05 dry finishing spray all over hair to enhance natural texture.
  3. Create a rough center part with fingers.
  4. Gather hair into a low ponytail, pulling the length halfway through an elastic to create a bun, and leaving the ends ex- posed.

    DOLCE AND GABBANA
    '1940s Italy'
"The look at Dolce this season is very soft and romantic. It’s very easy, almost like you were an American on holiday in Italy and you just threw your hair up for the evening. I used Redken’s wind blown 05 to get that gorgeous texture, and then gathered the hair up into a high ponytail, twisting it into a messy chignon. It’s very soft around the hairline with the little baby hairs pulled out, and I added just a bit of height at the crown to soften the silhouette. I finished the look by placing different types of crowns, scarves and beautiful hairpieces throughout the hair to en- hance the charm.”
    Create the look:

    1. Start by spraying Redken pillow proof blow dry express
primer all over damp hair and comb through.
    1. Use a round natural-bristle brush to blow-dry hair straight.
    2. Lightly spray Redken wind blown 05 dry finishing spray all over hair to enhance natural texture.
    3. Create a short center part with fingers.
    4. Use fingers to gather hair into a high ponytail at the crown of the head and secure with an elastic, leaving some baby hairs and random pieces out in the front.
    6. Twist the length of the ponytail into a messy chignon and secure with hair pins.

    Roberto Cavalli
    'The 80s Tomboy Quiff'

"Peter has a great instinct about hair and about his woman. It’s kind of a tomboyish 80s look, like when girls were experimenting with their sexuality and maybe wanted a touch of the boy’s quiff. I created a deep side part and then blow-dried the hair with Redken’s guts 10 to create a slight peak in the front and long and straight in the back, so it’s a bit boy in the front and girl in the back. The look is very easy and unstructured since I created it using my fingers, so it’s something that a woman could really achieve for herself.”

    Create the look:

    1. Start by spraying Redken Pillow Proof Blow Dry Express Primer
all over damp hair and comb through.
    2. Apply Redken Guts 10 volumizing spray-foam to damp hair.
    3. Using a round brush, blow-dry hair, lifting the crown up and to the side to create height in the front, and then blow-dry the back straight.
    4. Create a clean side part with a comb, keeping the lift in the front.
    5. Finish by Redken Triple Take 32 extreme high-hold hairspray all over hair, focusing at the top of the head for extra hold.

      Prada
      'Extreme style'

"Mrs. Prada had this idea of ‘conservative eccentricity.’ It feels a bit 20s, but a bit 70s when women often had very tough, extreme looks, which makes a very strong statement on the runway. It’s a simple look that screams. First, I cut each of the girls’ bangs to frame their face, so each girl really has her own style. I cut very aggressive bangs on only 5 or 6 of the girls, and it works because part of being a Prada girl is embracing the moment. I used Redken’s hardwear 16 to give some finish and toughness to the bangs, and then used Redken’s forceful 23 hairspray to slick the hair back into a simple ponytail, accentuating the head shape, which adds a sense of ease and boyishness to the finished look.”

      Create the look:
      1. Book an appointment at your favourite salon, and ask your stylist for bangs with tapered edges that best suit your face shape.
      2. To style the look, start by spraying Redken Pillow Proof Blow Dry Express Primer all over damp hair and comb through.
      3. Work a nickel-size amount of Redken Satinwear 02 prepping blow-dry lotion into damp hair.
      4. Blow dry hair straight using a flat brush.
      5. Tie hair back into a low ponytail, securing at the base of the head with an elastic.
      6. Apply a dime-size amount of Redken Hardwear 16 super-strong sculpting gel to the hairline and bangs, and then spray with Redken forceful 23 super strength finishing spray to set the style.
      7. Finish by spraying a light layer of Redken Triple Take 32 extreme high-hold hairspray all over hair for lasting hold.

        Versace
        'Healthy and glowing'

"The look at Versace this season is all about the individual, healthy, glowing woman. There’s such a wide range of beauty and Donatella just wanted me to enhance the hair, not change it, so it’s got kind of a glamourous, rock and roll feeling. I let the hair dry naturally so it has that beautiful texture, and then added a little bit of shine using Redken’s new glow dry, which is a blow-dry oil, and then Diamond Oil High Shine Airy Mist so it has a little sexiness to it, but with an ease."

        Create the look:
        1. Apply 4 – 5 pumps of Redken Glow Dry style-enhancing blow -dry lotion throughout damp hair and rough blow-dry to keep most of the hair’s natural texture.
        2. Let hair air dry completely.
        3. Create a center part with fingers and tousle to enhance movement.
        4. Finish by spraying Redken Diamond Oil High Shine Airy Mist all over hair to add instant lightweight shine

So there you have it! Milan Fashion week trends. I'm excited to get stuck into the New York Fashion Week.
